Gyeongnam National University was selected on the 16th as a ‘2024 Glocal University Preliminary Designated University’ by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea. This will accelerate efforts to nurture digital convergence talents, establish a digital ecosystem within the region, and promote joint development cooperation among industry, academia, and research institutes to lead the digital transformation of Changwon Special City, which hosts the largest national industrial complex in Korea.
A total of 109 universities formed 65 teams and submitted innovation plans for the 2024 Glocal University preliminary designation application. Among them, 39 applied individually, 6 applied jointly based on integration, and 20 applied jointly based on alliance. As a result of the evaluation, a total of 20 innovation plans were selected, including Gyeongnam National University and five universities that were preliminarily designated last year.
Gyeongnam National University attracted attention by setting the core direction as realizing the digital transformation of the Changwon National Industrial Complex through nurturing digital convergence talents as a ‘hub for regional digital transformation,’ establishing a digital ecosystem within the region, and promoting joint development cooperation among industry, academia, and research institutes.
Currently, Gyeongnam National University is developing next-generation artificial intelligence, ‘super-large AI,’ and core technologies to lead innovation in global manufacturing centered on the ‘Super-large Manufacturing AI Global Joint Research Center.’ This involves major corporations and small and medium-sized enterprises such as Gyeongnam Technopark, Megazone Cloud, KAIST, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, KT, SK Networks Service, AI.Nation, RCK, Markbase, KG Mobility, and Shinseong Delta Tech.
In particular, to nurture digital convergence talents desired by the nation and regional industries, the university is achieving bold innovation throughout its education by introducing an open modular curriculum, project-based teaching methods, and a convergence-type academic structure.
Additionally, it is promoting global innovation by encouraging young talents to settle in the region and attracting outstanding overseas talents. To support this, it plans to build an integrated industry-academia-research campus that enables openness and shared cooperation for active collaboration through spatial innovation. Having developed alongside the region, Gyeongnam National University will rise as a university with global competitiveness beyond the local area through this Glocal University project.
