Kakao Games and SM Collaborate on Idol-Based Mobile Game Development

Kakao Games is partnering with SM Entertainment to develop mobile games featuring idol groups.

On the 16th, Kakao Games and SM announced that they have signed an IP (intellectual property) license agreement based on this plan.

Through this agreement, the two companies plan to leverage their strong fandoms in the gaming and entertainment sectors to create new synergies in the global digital content market.

On the same day, the two companies revealed plans to develop the first digital collection mobile game featuring various idol artists, tentatively titled ‘SM GAME STATION’. Kakao Games will handle global publishing and service, its subsidiary Metabora will develop the game, and SM will provide the IP of its affiliated idol groups.

SM GAME STATION is a mobile collection game where users become managers of artists leading the global K-pop market, engage in schedule activities reinterpreted as mini-games, and collect digital photo cards.

The game features photo cards that capture the actual appearance and stage outfits of SM’s idols, and users can customize cards with parts reflecting each member’s unique traits. Additionally, events celebrating special occasions such as artists’ birthdays and debut anniversaries will be held, along with content linked to the artists’ real activity timelines.

The game is currently under development with a goal for global release in the second half of this year.

Han Sang-woo, CEO of Kakao Games, said, "By combining our service and development capabilities with SM Entertainment’s powerful content, we plan to offer a new entertainment experience in the global digital content market."
