"People Power Party Must Differentiate from the Presidential Office"

Amid the overwhelming victory of the opposition in the April 10 general election, public sentiment showed a preference for cooperation between the ruling and opposition parties. The ruling party, which suffered a crushing defeat, was urged to "differentiate itself and act as a check" against President Yoon Suk-yeol.

According to a public opinion poll released on the 16th by Media Tomato (commissioned by News Tomato and conducted over two days from the 13th to the 14th, targeting 1,017 men and women nationwide aged 18 and older via wireless automated response), regarding the relationship setting with the ruling party by the Democratic Party of Korea, which secured a majority of seats in the general election, 55.6% responded that "dialogue and cooperation with the government and ruling party are necessary." Meanwhile, 38.2% expressed the opinion that "a tough opposition struggle should be focused on," and 6.2% were unsure.


Notably, among supporters of the Democratic Party, 68.7% called for a "tough opposition struggle." In contrast, 90.2% of People Power Party supporters chose "dialogue and cooperation with the government and ruling party." Among supporters of the People's Revolutionary Party, 55.1% supported a "tough opposition struggle," but 40.3% also favored "dialogue and cooperation with the government and ruling party."

Among those who identified their ideological stance as moderate, 54.4% advocated for "dialogue and cooperation with the government and ruling party," while 36.6% supported a "tough opposition struggle."


Regarding the relationship the ruling People Power Party should have with the presidential office, there was a strong call for differentiation. While 54.0% responded that the People Power Party should "differentiate itself and act as a check" against the presidential office, 38.8% said cooperation was necessary for national stability, and 7.2% were unsure.


Regarding the People Power Party's defeat in the general election, 68.0% held President Yoon Suk-yeol responsible, ranking first, while 10.0% pointed to former Chairman Han.


Regarding the next party leader of the People Power Party, former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min ranked first with 26.3%, former emergency committee chairman Han Dong-hoon was second with 20.3%, and People Power Party lawmaker Ahn Cheol-soo and newly elected member of the 22nd National Assembly Na Kyung-won ranked third and fourth with 11.6% and 11.1%, respectively.
