Song Miryeong, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, visited 'Metro Farm' located inside Sangdo Station in Dongjak-gu, Seoul on the 15th, and personally toured the urban vertical farm model established through collaboration between the vertical farming company Planty Farm and Seoul Metro.
The Metro Farm visited by Minister Song is a business model that utilizes idle spaces within subway stations to build vertical farms, cultivating leafy vegetables and other crops in the city, while also operating experience and education activities, cafes, and linking production, distribution, and experience in a complex manner.
Since 2019, Planty Farm has partnered with Seoul Metro to operate Metro Farms in five Seoul subway stations (Sangdo, Dapsimni, Euljiro 3-ga, Chungjeongno, and Cheonwang).
Minister Song said, "Through this visit, I confirmed that the vertical farming industry can transform idle urban spaces into resting places for citizens and multifunctional cultural spaces," adding, "We will actively support exporting this urban vertical farm complex model not only domestically but also overseas."
Meanwhile, in March, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced the 'Smart Agricultural Industry Development Plan' in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, which includes regulatory improvements to revitalize the vertical farming industry. Kang Daehyun, CEO of Planty Farm, expressed gratitude for the government’s development plan reflecting field voices and said, "Based on domestic industry growth, we will strive to expand exports of Korean-style vertical farms."
