Kim Hyun-gi, Chairman of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, and the Seoul City Council delegation announced on the 12th that they will visit Beijing and Shanghai, China, from the 12th to the 16th to discuss ways to strengthen exchange and cooperation between the two countries.
This visit follows the signing of a friendship exchange cooperation memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two councils in 2022, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Seoul-Beijing friendship alliance, and was made possible by the official invitation from the Beijing Municipal People's Congress.
Chairman Kim said, "During the COVID-19 pandemic, we maintained a friendly relationship by donating quarantine supplies to each other and signing an MOU between the two councils. In particular, Seoul and Beijing, as the capitals of their respective countries, face many common challenges such as transportation, housing, tourism, and the environment, so we believe that exchange and cooperation can create synergy."
The delegation will visit the Beijing Municipal People's Congress on the day of arrival and the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress on the 15th to share common urban interests and explore concrete cooperation plans. They will inspect excellent policy sites such as the 798 Art District, Xuhui Riverside, grassroots legislative liaison offices, and the delivery platform Meituan, and visit the Shanghai Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea to honor the spirit of independence.
Chairman Kim stated, "We are now in an era where major global cities drive national competitiveness, and Seoul is making multifaceted efforts to become a global TOP5 city. Through this visit, we will carefully examine not only the development of friendly relations between cities but also any aspects that can be applied to Seoul."
