Gyeongnam National University produced a total of 24 elected members in the 22nd National Assembly election held on the 10th, including both constituency and proportional representation seats.
The elected members consist of 4 alumni from undergraduate and graduate programs, 6 former faculty members, and 14 from open courses. In particular, the university demonstrated its long-standing history, tradition, and alumni power by producing 9 elected members solely from the Gyeongnam region.
Kang Min-guk, an alumnus who graduated from Gyeongnam National University’s Department of Law (Class of ’94) and earned master’s and doctoral degrees in law, successfully won re-election this year as the People Power Party candidate for Jinju-si Eul. After entering the National Assembly for the first time in the 21st general election, he served as the People Power Party’s floor deputy leader, floor spokesperson, and chief spokesperson.
Olympic gold medalist and ‘Shooting Emperor’ Jin Jong-oh was elected for the first time as a proportional representative of the People Power Party’s satellite party, People’s Future. Jin graduated from the Department of Business Administration (Class of ’98) and earned master’s and doctoral degrees in physical education. He has been actively involved as a director of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee and the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation.
Seo Cheon-ho, who earned a doctoral degree in public administration from Gyeongnam National University and served as the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency Commissioner and the 2nd Deputy Director of the National Intelligence Service, was elected to the National Assembly representing Sacheon-si, Namhae-gun, and Hadong-gun as a People Power Party candidate.
Lim Jong-deuk, who holds a doctoral degree in political science and served as the Defense Secretary in the Office of the National Security Advisor and as the 2nd Deputy Director of the National Security Office, was elected as a People Power Party candidate from Yeongju-si, Yeongyang-gun, and Bonghwa-gun.
Choi Hyung-doo, a former invited professor at Gyeongnam National University and elected member of the National Assembly for Changwon-si Masanhappo-gu, succeeded in his re-election bid. He has been actively promoting various policies and efforts to revitalize Masanhappo-gu as a digital innovation city, including the Ultra-large Manufacturing AI Global Joint Research Center and the Digital Free Trade Zone.
Kim Tae-ho (People Power Party, former Governor of Gyeongnam Province), who reached his fourth term as a member of the National Assembly for Yangsan-si Eul, Kim Jong-yang (People Power Party, former Interpol President) from Changwon-si Uichang-gu, and Heo Seong-moo (Democratic Party of Korea, former Mayor of Changwon-si) from Changwon-si Seongsan-gu also served as invited professors. Lee Jae-gang (Democratic Party of Korea) from Uijeongbu-si Eul and proportional representative Kim Min-jeon (People’s Future) were affiliated with the university as faculty members.
