Dongdaemun-gu, Events for People with Disabilities and Their Families Throughout April

Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) announced on the 15th that it is holding events throughout April to celebrate Disabled Persons Day on the 20th, aimed at people with disabilities and their families.


On the 15th, events such as foot massages and prize draws took place at Dongmun Disabled Welfare Center, and on the 19th, a ceremony will be held in the auditorium on the 2nd floor of Dongdaemun-gu Office featuring cultural performances, awards for contributors to disability welfare from the Seoul Association of the Physically Disabled Dongdaemun Branch, and support of 3.6 million KRW from the proceeds of used clothing collection boxes to vulnerable groups.


On the 25th of this month, a ‘Walking Competition for People with Disabilities’ co-hosted by Dongdaemun-gu Facilities Management Corporation and the nonprofit organization Howlhoe will be held around Jungnangcheon Sports Park and Jangan Cherry Blossom Road. Additionally, a healing time to interact with ‘Wally,’ a miniature companion horse and honorary ambassador of Dongdaemun-gu, will be provided. On the same day, relaxation programs such as herbal foot baths and medicinal food experiences operated by the Seoul Oriental Medicine Promotion Center will be offered for caregivers of children with developmental disabilities.


Starting with a 2-day, 1-night camp at the National Chuncheon Forest Center with people with developmental disabilities on the 1st of this month, the district also organized an outing to Nami Island in Gapyeong on the 9th for the short-term residential facility for people with disabilities, ‘Haneulkkumteo.’


As of April this year, Dongdaemun-gu has 15,425 registered people with disabilities, supporting their healthy lives through the operation of nine welfare facilities for the disabled, three independent living centers for people with severe disabilities, ten disability activity support agencies, ten developmental rehabilitation service providers, twelve disability organizations, and the provision of disability pensions.


Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, “I support the efforts of many people working hard to create a society where differences are not inconveniences,” and added, “We will do our best to build a city where people with disabilities and their families can enjoy happiness in their daily lives.”
