Gwanak-gu Void Exploration... The End of Ground Subsidence Accidents

Gwanak-gu (District Mayor Park Jun-hee) has launched an "Underground Void Detection Service" starting in April to ensure the safety of its residents.

The district planned this detection service to prevent road collapse accidents caused by underground voids. As social demands for underground safety management increase due to incidents such as road subsidence and sinkholes, the initiative aims to proactively address voids identified as a major cause of road collapses.

Gwanak-gu will divide the entire district into five zones and conduct underground void surveys every five years.

First, this year, a detailed investigation will be conducted over a 79 km section covering Seonghyeon-dong, Euncheon-dong, Jungang-dong, Cheongnim-dong, and Haengun-dong areas. Subsequently, a total of 460 km will be surveyed sequentially by 2028.

Using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) equipment, the survey will identify ▲precise locations of underground facilities ▲exact locations and sizes of voids ▲and areas expected to experience ground subsidence.

Upon detecting underground voids, the district will immediately restore small-scale voids using flowable filler materials, while larger voids will be investigated through excavation to identify causes and prevent accidents such as sinkholes.

Meanwhile, from 2021 to 2022, the district invested 530 million KRW to survey 21 neighborhoods within the area, confirming 95 void sites over a total survey length of 363 km, and promptly carrying out repairs, demonstrating ongoing efforts to manage underground safety.

District Mayor Park Jun-hee stated, “We will complete the first underground void survey before the main rainy season to prevent various accidents caused by ground subsidence during heavy rains. We will do our best to create a road environment where residents can feel safe through proactive and systematic safety management.”
