Park Hee-young, Yongsan District Mayor, Attends the 14th Hyochangwon 8th Rank Patriotic Martyrs Memorial Ceremony

Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan District, attended the '14th Hyochangwon 8 Martyrs Memorial Ceremony' held at the main hall of Uiyeolsa Shrine in Hyochang Park (National Historic Site No. 330) from 2 p.m. on the 11th, marking the 105th anniversary of the establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea.

The event was attended by about 150 people, including Oh Cheon-jin, Chairman of the Yongsan District Council, Lee Jong-rae, President of the Hyochangwon 7 Martyrs Memorial Association, related officials, and local residents. The ceremony proceeded in the order of the national anthem, memorial speeches, three cheers of "manse," ritual rites, and incense offering.

The ritual rites followed traditional ceremonial methods, including ▲Jeonpye-rye (a ceremony of offering incense three times and bowing before the spirit tablet), ▲Chohun-rye (the first offering of a cup), ▲Ahun-rye (the second offering of a cup), ▲Jonghun-rye (the final offering of a cup), ▲Eumbok-rye (a ritual of eating or drinking after the ceremony), and ▲Mangyo-rye (a ritual of burning the memorial tablet).

After the ritual rites, residents also participated in the incense offering. The purpose was to honor the spirits of the eight patriotic martyrs and to elevate the spirit of love for the country and independent sovereignty.

Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan District, stated, “We pray for the eternal rest of the martyrs who devoted their lives to the freedom and independence of the nation despite unpredictable crises and hardships,” and added, “We will ensure that there is no neglect in honoring the families of veterans with respect and gratitude for the patriotic martyrs.”

The memorial ceremony is held annually on the anniversary of the establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea (April 11) or on Hwanguk Day (November 23), hosted by the Hyochangwon 7 Martyrs Memorial Association (President Lee Jong-rae). The establishment anniversary commemorates the legal succession and historical significance of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, which was founded through the March 1st Movement.

The eight martyrs refer to the key figures of the Provisional Government enshrined at Uiyeolsa Shrine in Hyochang Park (Baekbeom Kim Gu, Seok-o Lee Dong-nyeong, Cheongsa Jo Seong-hwan, Dongam Cha Ri-seok) and the patriots Lee Bong-chang, Maehun Yun Bong-gil, Gupa Baek Jeong-gi, and Doma Ahn Jung-geun.

After liberation, Kim Gu personally brought their remains to Hyochang Park and established the burial site. Ahn Jung-geun’s burial site remains a temporary grave as his remains have not yet been found. Kim Gu himself was also buried in Hyochang Park.
