Sancheong-gun Initiates Administrative Procedures to End Dog Meat Consumption

Submission of Operation Report by May 7
Completion Implementation Plan by August 5

Sancheong-gun, Gyeongnam Province announced on the 11th that it has initiated administrative procedures following the termination of dog meat consumption. This procedure follows the enactment of the "Special Act on the Termination of Breeding, Slaughter, and Distribution of Dogs for Meat Consumption" on February 6.

Accordingly, dog breeding farms for meat consumption within the region must submit an operation report by May 7, three months after the law's enactment date. By August 5, six months after the enactment date, they must submit a dog meat consumption termination implementation plan.

Dog breeders, slaughterhouses, and distribution farm owners must submit their documents to the Livestock Disease Control division of the Agricultural and Livestock Department at the Sancheong Agricultural Technology Center, while dog meat food service and distribution businesses (dog meat raw material food) must submit theirs to the Sancheong County Office’s Environmental Hygiene Department.

If breeding farms fail to report within the deadline, they will be excluded from support for business continuation or closure and may be fined up to 3 million KRW.

The county plans to verify the operational status of farms that have submitted operation reports and continuously monitor compliance with the termination implementation plan until closure.

A Sancheong-gun official stated, “We will conduct periodic inspections to check the implementation of the termination plan,” adding, “We will do our best to end dog meat breeding in accordance with the purpose of the special act, including preventing animal cruelty.”

He also urged, “Please submit the report and termination implementation plan within the deadline to avoid any disadvantages.”

Meanwhile, the "Special Act on the Termination of Breeding, Slaughter, and Distribution of Dogs for Meat Consumption" prohibits the new operation of dog breeding farms and slaughter, distribution, and sales facilities for meat consumption purposes.

Additionally, from 2027 onwards, no one will be allowed to breed, raise, or slaughter dogs for meat consumption, nor distribute or sell foods cooked or processed using dogs as raw materials.
