Gangnam-gu, First Nationwide Full Replacement of AI-Based Fitness Equipment at Non-Exercise Senior Welfare Center, Nonhyeon Senior Welfare Center...Strength Training Essential to Prevent Age-Related Sarcopenia...AI Equipment Automatically Adjusts Weight for Individual Safety Excellence
Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) is establishing a ‘Smart Fitness Center’ equipped with AI-based exercise machines at Nonhyeon Senior Welfare Center and will hold an opening ceremony on the 17th from 2 to 3 p.m.
As society enters a super-aged phase, the importance of strength training for healthy aging is being emphasized. However, as aging progresses, many experience sarcopenia, making strength training difficult, leading to easy abandonment or injury from overexertion without knowing their exercise capacity. In response to the health needs of seniors, the district remodeled the space previously used as a health management room at Nonhyeon Senior Welfare Center to create a dedicated gym for seniors where strength training is easy. This is the first case nationwide to fully introduce AI-based smart exercise equipment, usually found only in specialized fitness centers, into a senior welfare center.
The seven AI-based upper and lower body strength training machines each have a monitor. When a person exerts force or resists weight, the monitor displays a graph, allowing users to visually understand the appropriate weight for themselves.
In particular, these smart exercise machines excel in safety. Unlike general fitness equipment, users do not manually adjust heavy weights or plates; instead, AI automatically adjusts the weight according to the exerciser’s condition on that day. After exercising, personalized big data such as exercise volume, body balance status, and muscle function condition are provided.
Additionally, a health trainer certified as a senior sports instructor is stationed to teach how to use the exercise machines. They also evaluate individual body fat, muscle mass, and medical history, providing customized exercise prescriptions in a one-stop service.
Jo Seong-myeong, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, stated, “The Smart Fitness Center, where seniors can safely perform strength training, is expected to become a role model for senior-exclusive exercise facilities required in a super-aged society.” He added, “We will reorganize the functions and structures of welfare centers and senior centers frequently visited by seniors to create complex convenience facilities where they can enjoy exercise and leisure.”
