Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) operates the ‘Dureun Dureun Neighborhood Learning Center’ program so that all residents can enjoy various lifelong learning opportunities close to home.
‘Dureun Dureun Neighborhood Learning Center’ is a neighborhood-level lifelong learning center that utilizes idle spaces in small libraries, village vitality centers, and other local centers near residents’ daily lives, allowing easy and convenient access to lifelong learning programs.
One learning center is allocated per neighborhood (two in Doksan 1-dong), offering 31 programs across eight fields: ▲ digital education ▲ support for marginalized groups ▲ vocational skill enhancement ▲ solving local issues ▲ village learning culture ▲ connection with local schools ▲ family and intergenerational communication ▲ and promotion of everyday culture.
Programs are subdivided considering the characteristics of target groups such as children, youth, seniors, and small business owners, and integrated programs that children and adults can attend together are also provided.
Key programs include ▲ stained glass making ▲ handmade rattan crafts ▲ magic school ? I am also a magician ▲ basic French ▲ humanities trips with children ▲ and traditional Makgeolli brewing. Additionally, a night program for office workers called ‘Read Every Day and Write by Hand’ and a specialized program for people with developmental disabilities called ‘Picture Books and the Green World’ are also offered.
There is also a learning-practice project to share knowledge with the local community. Based on what is learned in the programs, participants share their skills through talent donation, volunteering, and sharing works (concerts, exhibitions) with local residents.
Education schedules can be checked on the Geumcheon-gu Education Portal, and applications can be made online from three weeks before the start of classes or by visiting the Geumcheon-gu Lifelong Learning Center. Tuition is free, but students must cover material and textbook costs.
Last year, 56 courses were opened and operated 356 times, with 533 participants. In a satisfaction survey, 95% responded with ‘satisfied’ or higher, and 67% of participants were new learners, expanding the base of lifelong learning.
Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “We hope many people will participate in the Neighborhood Learning Center program, where they can experience various learning and sharing opportunities near their homes. We will continue to discover learning centers and operate diverse programs so that residents can participate in desired learning anytime and anywhere.”
