Mapo-gu Proposes New Names for 'Mangwon Hangang Park' and 'Mapo Hangang Park'

Mangwon Hangang Park Extends from Sangam-dong to Mapo-dong in Mapo-gu... District Calls for a Broader Name

Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, "Mapo-gu Closely Connected to Hangang, Hopes for a Name Reflecting Local Conditions and Characteristics"

Mapo-gu Proposes New Names for 'Mangwon Hangang Park' and 'Mapo Hangang Park'

Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Kang-su) will collect public opinions on changing the name of ‘Mangwon Hangang Park’ to ‘Mapo Hangang Park’ from April 15 to May 31.

Currently, Seoul has a total of 11 Hangang parks, including Mangwon Hangang Park, Gwangnaru, Jamsil, Ttukseom, Jamwon, Ichon, Banpo, Yeouido, Nanji, Gangseo, and Yanghwa Hangang Parks.

‘Mangwon Hangang Park’ stretches 7.4 km from Hongjecheon Bridge in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu to Mangchocheon Bridge (north end of Wonhyo Bridge), passing through Sangam, Mangwon, Hapjeong, Seogang, Sinsu, Yonggang, and Dohwa-dong.

A district official explained that the review of this name change originated from a proposal by the local residents' autonomy committee last year, and many citizens thought that the Hangang Park was only adjacent to Mangwon-dong because of the name ‘Mangwon Hangang Park.’

Accordingly, the district is conducting a preliminary survey to promote changing the name to ‘Mapo Hangang Park,’ which can encompass the entire Mapo-gu area bordering the Hangang River, rather than the specific administrative dong name ‘Mangwon.’

The survey targets Mapo-gu residents and users of Mangwon Hangang Park, and includes five items: ▲residence in Mapo-gu ▲business ownership ▲gender ▲age group ▲opinions on the name change.

The district plans to distribute the survey forms at the Mapo-gu Office 2nd floor civil service center and local community centers, and post a QR code on the Mapo-gu website to collect opinions until May 31.

After gathering opinions and undergoing review and resolution by the Mapo-gu naming committee, the results will be submitted to Seoul City. If the name is changed to ‘Mapo Hangang Park,’ it is expected to enhance the economic effect by raising the urban recognition of Mapo among domestic and international visitors to the Hangang Park.

Park Kang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “Considering Mapo-gu’s history of development through the Hangang River and its geography bordering the Hangang River the longest, the Hangang and Mapo-gu are inseparable,” and added, “We ask for the active participation and valuable opinions of citizens who use the Hangang Park regarding this new name change that can highlight Mapo-gu’s strengths and regional characteristics.”
