An Juyong, the Progressive Party candidate, received 20.22%, and Kim Jong-woon, the People Power Party candidate, received 9.07%.
Shin, a politician with a background as a farmer activist, has served as a member of the Jeonnam Provincial Assembly, mayor of Naju, and as a member of the 19th and 21st National Assembly.
He first ran in the 1995 local elections and was elected as the youngest member of the Jeonnam Provincial Assembly. In 2002, he was elected mayor of Naju for the third term of direct elections, and then won a seat in the 19th National Assembly, marking his first entry into the National Assembly.
Although he was defeated by candidate Son Geum-ju in the 20th general election, he reclaimed his seat in the 21st general election and re-entered the National Assembly. With his victory in the 22nd general election, he has risen to the status of a three-term veteran lawmaker.
Shin Jeong-hoon said, “The rough knuckles of your hands that held mine throughout the election period, and the desperate voices pleading for politics to be done well so that the people do not have to worry about politics, are still vivid in my mind. I will never forget them for life.” He emphasized, “I will abandon hatred and political strife and revive politics of dialogue and compromise.”
He continued, “Together with Representative Lee Jae-myung, we will block Yoon Seok-yeol’s prosecutorial dictatorship and restore the fallen democracy,” adding, “The Democratic Party will become a strong shield for us Honam people and a competent policy party responsible for Honam’s future.”
He also stated, “I will devote myself fully to creating a fair and harmonious society where there is no need to go to Seoul, where hope exists in the provinces, and above all, where the sweat shed by our farmers is properly respected.” He emphasized, “I will lay the foundation for a super-regional local government centered on Naju and Hwasun in the Yeongsan River basin, a super-regional local government without worries about rural and regional extinction.”
Furthermore, he promised, “I will attract the Gwangju·Jeonnam energy new industry cluster to Naju and the advanced medical complex to Hwasun, making them leading cities responsible for the future of Gwangju and Jeonnam.” He pledged, “By enacting the Basic Act on Farmers, the New Grain Management Act, and the Fruit Industry Promotion Act, I will create a Naju and Hwasun where young people eagerly farm, and where the sound of babies crying never ceases.”
He added, “I will show politics that serves the sovereign people with a humbler attitude, and politics that wins not by fighting but by work.”
