The "Vaguely Speaking Senior" Every Company Has... Harmful or Helpful?

"Amugeossi, this is something I think the manager would dislike."

What is common among workplace seniors who speak ambiguously without a subject like this? It is the number one bad habit that never helps the organization or juniors.

On the 10th, Japan's Diamond Online introduced part of a book called The Mask of a Leader recently written by consultant Ando Kodai. According to Ando’s explanation, excellent leaders properly verbalize when conveying something to people. Therefore, they are careful not to make the subject ambiguous and clearly specify who will do what by when.

On the other hand, what characteristics do unhelpful bosses have? They make the subject ambiguous and do not clarify deadlines. People who have the habit of saying things like, "About this task, if you don’t do it quickly, the manager will get angry," should be watched out for. This creates a situation where they stand on the same side as subordinates, thinking "the manager is a bad person." Moreover, they do not decide "by when it would be good to finish" regarding their own responsibilities. This kind of habit is especially common among those who have just become leaders. Without learning “good communication methods,” one can become an “unhelpful boss.”

For example, suppose there is a shared computer in the office. An ambiguous rule like "Let’s keep the shared computer clean" results in no one cleaning it. More precisely, it should be clear like "After using it, please wipe it with a disinfectant sheet and then close it," specifying exactly what needs to be done. The leader’s role is to eliminate invisible stress like this and point out when rules are not followed. Without clear rules, members start to look for invisible rules among themselves, and relationships begin to break down. A company where people say, "Why doesn’t everyone use it cleanly?" is in a dangerous state.
