Yongsan-gu Advances Sewage Odor Reduction Project at Yongmun and Ichon Markets

Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) is implementing a ‘Sewer Odor Reduction Project’ to address odor issues at Yongsan Yongmun Market and Ichon Market.

The district plans to complete the removal of sediment from sewer pipes that tend to clog before the summer rainy season to reduce odors. In particular, they aim to prevent flood damage by cleaning sewer pipes in sections with frequent sediment buildup and high complaint volumes.

Odors occur because various byproducts accumulate in the sewers due to the nature of the markets. The district intends to clean various debris that accumulates in sewer pipes and rainwater inlets causing odors, install odor reduction devices, and effectively eliminate and block odors, promoting a ‘Zero Sewer Odor’ project.

Last month, at Yongsan Yongmun Market, they conducted ▲900m of street water cleaning in two alleys ▲sewer pipe cleaning and dredging (1,057m) ▲and newly installed 87 odor blocking devices after cleaning rainwater inlets.

At Ichon Market, they completed ▲sewer pipe cleaning and dredging (1,168m) ▲and newly installed 54 odor blocking devices after cleaning rainwater inlets. By June, they plan to add ‘Pole-type Adsorption Decomposition Odor Reduction Devices’ at three additional locations.

Additionally, Yongsan District Mayor Park Hee-young visited ▲Sinheung Market ▲Huam Market ▲Bokwang Market ▲Manri Market to meet with market merchants and provide information about the project. Especially on the 8th, Mayor Park personally participated in dredging work and rainwater inlet cleaning along the main road at Bokwang and Manri Markets.

They will analyze the effects of odor reduction afterward and continue to implement the Zero Odor project.

Mayor Park Hee-young stated, “I hope this project will dramatically improve market odors and create a pleasant market environment,” adding, “We will continue to make efforts so that residents visiting traditional markets can feel the improvements.”
