The Naju Yeongsangang Festival Promotion Committee held its 2nd committee meeting last month on the 12th at the Songwol-dong Administrative Welfare Center meeting room, where they discussed the festival name and conducted a vote to appoint the director through committee member recommendations.
The committee thoroughly evaluated the three candidates for general director based on event planning skills, directing capabilities, and career history, ultimately appointing Park Myung-sung, artistic director of Shinshi Company Co., Ltd., as the final choice.
Park, the newly appointed general director, will serve until December 31 of this year.
Born in Haenam, Jeollanam-do, Park Myung-sung, who now holds the baton for the Naju Yeongsangang Festival, entered the cultural and artistic world in 1982 as a theater actor.
Since then, he has worked for over 40 years as a stage director, director, performance producer, and artistic director of Shinshi Company Co., Ltd.
Park is recognized as a leading producer in South Korea who has spearheaded the popularization of musicals domestically by producing Korean performances of globally beloved musicals such as 'Mamma Mia,' 'Chicago,' and 'Sanbul' (Forest Fire).
In particular, he boasts outstanding planning and directing skills, having served as the general director of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 104th National Sports Festival held last year in Mokpo, Jeonnam, as well as the FIFA U-20 World Cup opening ceremony (2017) and the 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade opening and closing ceremonies (2015).
Mayor Yoon Byung-tae congratulated the director on his appointment, saying, “It is an honor to have Director Park, who is renowned as a world-class performance producer beyond Korea, as the festival’s general director. We hope that Naju will create a representative model of a local festival where citizens feel pride and tourists want to visit again next year, set along the Yeongsangang River that holds 2,000 years of Naju history.”
Newly appointed General Director Park Myung-sung responded with his aspirations, saying, “I want to showcase a modern and future-oriented performance at the festival that can only be seen in Naju, utilizing cutting-edge technology against the backdrop of Naju’s long history. I will work to create a festival that makes local residents, especially the younger generation, proud of life in Naju and look forward to the festival in the coming years.”
