Sacheon City Prepares Traffic Response Measures Ahead of Space Aviation Agency Opening

Sacheon City in Gyeongnam Province is preparing various transportation response measures ahead of the opening of the Space Aviation Agency.

The city plans to establish a new route between Sacheon Terminal and the temporary office of the Space Aviation Agency, operating a city bus starting in May to coincide with the opening of the agency's temporary office.

This route will pass through apartments and elementary, middle, and high schools located in Sacheon-eup, Sanam-myeon, and Yonghyeon-myeon, as well as the temporary office. The number of buses in operation will be one each for the upward and downward routes based on the temporary office.

Additionally, since the bus timetables and stops attached uniformly at city bus stops are considered difficult for outsiders and citizens to recognize, Sacheon City plans to produce customized route maps for each bus stop throughout the city.

The newly produced route maps will include information such as current location, bus direction, route sketch, estimated arrival time, dispatch intervals, and the administrative divisions for each bus stop. The project will start in May and is scheduled to be completed in the second half of the year.

Furthermore, a preliminary survey has begun to establish a demand-responsive transport (DRT) system for eup and myeon areas where buses are currently rarely operated.

The demand-responsive transport system is a customized passenger service that flexibly operates routes and stops according to passenger demand.

With the completion of the Gyeongsangnam-do type demand-responsive platform within this year, investigations will begin into village-level public transportation usage, applicable routes, and project feasibility, aiming to operate the demand-responsive transport system starting in 2025.

In addition, to improve mobility for transportation-vulnerable groups in Sacheon City, a voucher taxi service for these groups was introduced and implemented in March this year. The city has also initiated a basic plan for an intelligent transportation system to automate the operation and management of the transportation system and effectively respond to traffic congestion and transportation issues.

Based on this project data, Sacheon City plans to build a smart transportation system through relevant project competitions with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and others. In particular, due to the confusion caused to citizens and outsiders by multiple taxi call numbers in both urban and eup/myeon areas, preliminary work has begun on an integrated call taxi (center) to unify taxi call numbers.

The city plans to establish a provisional 'Sacheon City Integrated Call Taxi Promotion Committee' within the local taxi industry to conduct full discussions and build an integrated call center within two years. Once the integrated call taxi (center) is operational, it is expected that citizens will be able to use taxis more conveniently through unified call numbers and smartphone reservations.

Moreover, the city is jointly promoting with Gyeongnam Province a research project to reorganize Sacheon Airport functions for expansion to an international airport level, as well as establishing an intercity bus route between Jinju Terminal and the temporary office.

A city official stated, “It is true that our current public transportation system is not at a level that satisfies citizens,” and added, “We will seek various response measures to ensure that relocated employees and their families, as well as citizens, do not experience inconvenience in using public transportation following the opening of the Space Aviation Agency.”
