Cho Hyun-joon "Will Fulfill Environmental Responsibility as a Global Citizen"
Hyosung announced on the 9th that it will join hands with Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do, and the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency to engage in activities aimed at improving the marine ecosystem environment.
Hyosung Group (Hyosung, Hyosung TNC, Hyosung Advanced Materials, Hyosung Heavy Industries, Hyosung Chemical) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for "carbon neutrality and sustainable marine ecosystem conservation" with Wando-gun and the Namhae Headquarters of the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency at the Wando-gun Office in Jeollanam-do.
Through this MOU, Hyosung, Wando-gun, and the Namhae Headquarters of the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency agreed to mutually cooperate in efforts such as creating and managing sea forests, improving the marine ecological environment, practicing ESG management, and promoting the Zalpiseup Blue Carbon project to achieve carbon neutrality and biodiversity conservation.
Blue carbon, known as "good carbon," refers to the carbon absorbed by the marine ecosystem. According to the United Nations and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the marine ecosystem is known to absorb carbon 50 times faster than terrestrial ecosystems.
Zalpiseup is recognized internationally as one of the three major blue carbons alongside mangroves and salt marshes (tidal flats where plants grow). Zalpiseup is a perennial marine seagrass that uniquely blooms flowers in the sea and serves as a spawning ground, habitat, and refuge for various marine life such as fish.
Hyosung has selected the Donggori sea area in Sinji-myeon, Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do, as the site for the sea forest creation project and plans to plant Zalpiseup over an area of 1.59㎢ to provide habitats for diverse marine organisms.

Chairman Cho Hyun-joon stated, "As a global citizen, Hyosung will continuously strive to fulfill its environmental responsibilities such as responding to climate change and achieving carbon neutrality to conserve the marine ecosystem, the source of life, and to create a sustainable future."
Hyosung began managing the Zalpiseup forest project in December 2022, becoming the first private company to do so for sustainable marine ecosystem conservation.
In May of last year, it signed an MOU with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency to expand the sea forest blue carbon project.
Hyosung is also actively engaged in various marine environmental protection activities, including pet beach cleanup efforts to collect marine debris at Yongyu Beach in Yeongjongdo, Incheon.
