This feature is implemented through the 'Smart Switch' app, which supports data transfer when changing Galaxy smartphones. Previously, only 'text chats' in regular chat rooms could be transferred for free using KakaoTalk's 'Chat Backup' feature. Photos and videos had to be backed up separately or required a paid service.
With the addition of this new feature, Galaxy users can now easily and freely transfer not only KakaoTalk chats but also photo and video data through 'Smart Switch.' Even message statuses such as 'unread' are fully transferred.
KakaoTalk's 'Open Chat' data, which was previously impossible to restore anywhere, can now also be transferred to the new Galaxy smartphone. 'Open Chat' is a feature that allows people who do not know each other to chat on specific topics without adding each other as friends via phone numbers or Talk IDs. Samsung Electronics and Kakao confirmed the high usage rate of 'Open Chat' among Galaxy smartphone users and decided to support it.
Samsung Electronics and Kakao prioritized security and user convenience in the data transfer feature. Previously, users had to set a 'password' to protect backed-up data, then enter KakaoTalk user authentication and the backup data password on the new device to restore the data.
Now, with the Galaxy 'Smart Switch' app, KakaoTalk data can be easily transferred, and existing data is restored by simply completing KakaoTalk user authentication on the new device without a separate password.
