First Domestic Mixed Power Generation Infrastructure Established
140 Billion KRW Project, Handling Design, Procurement, and Construction
Hydrogen Compound Storage Tank and Loading/Unloading, Transmission Facilities Built
Samsung C&T is building the first hydrogen compound co-firing power generation infrastructure in Samcheok, Gangwon Province, South Korea.

On the 8th, Samsung C&T Construction Division announced that it signed a contract with Korea Southern Power to construct infrastructure worth 140 billion KRW at the Samcheok Integrated Power Complex site in Samcheok City, Gangwon Province, capable of storing, unloading, and transmitting hydrogen compounds.
This is the first project in South Korea to establish co-firing power generation infrastructure including storage tanks. Co-firing power generation is a method of producing electricity by combusting a mixture of two or more types of fuel.
This project involves Korea Southern Power building clean energy infrastructure such as one 30,000-ton hydrogen compound storage tank that compresses and stores hydrogen compounds for co-firing power generation, as well as unloading and transmission facilities. Samsung C&T will independently carry out the design, procurement, and construction (EPC) in an integrated manner, with completion scheduled for July 2027.
Samsung C&T explained, "We succeeded in securing the project based on optimal technical solutions, including capabilities accumulated through numerous energy storage facility projects in Qatar and Singapore, and collaboration with Whessoe, a UK-based specialized energy storage facility design company, to obtain international certification for the world's largest storage tank design technology."
A key feature of this project is the application of a fully sealed double-wall storage tank structure for hydrogen compound storage facilities, the first of its kind in South Korea, instead of a single-wall tank. The plan includes installing top-tier environmental equipment such as advanced detection and blocking systems and real-time environmental substance monitoring systems.
Upon completion of this project, Korea Southern Power plans to promote co-firing power generation by mixing 20% hydrogen compounds, a carbon-free fuel, with coal in existing coal-fired power plants. Korea Southern Power expects an annual reduction of 1.1 million tons of greenhouse gases and improvements in air quality.
Shim Jae-won, Vice President of the Technology and Safety Headquarters at Korea Southern Power, said, "The Samcheok hydrogen compound co-firing power generation infrastructure is a significant first step toward transitioning to clean fuels, and we plan to successfully complete the project to contribute to national greenhouse gas reduction."
Lee Byung-soo, Vice President and Head of Energy Solutions Business Division at Samsung C&T, stated, "Based on the EPC achievements secured through the first domestic hydrogen compound co-firing demonstration, we will participate in various renewable energy projects both domestically and internationally in the future."
