A Woman in Her 30s Says, "I Always Gave to My Struggling Close Friend"
Most Netizens Sympathize... "Hard to Understand"
A story about a woman cutting ties with a friend who gave a small wedding gift caught attention.
On the 4th, a woman in her early 30s named A posted on an online community, asking, "I want to cut ties with a friend after my wedding. Am I being too sensitive or harsh?"
A, who recently got married, explained, "My parents are not wealthy but live comfortably to some extent, and I also earn a decent amount and live comfortably. My husband earns even more than I do, so we are financially well-off."
A said, "I have a close friend who is one of my top five best friends. Knowing that she was struggling financially, I always tried to be more generous. When we ate out, if I paid three times, she paid twice, and sometimes I gave her clothes or cosmetics as gifts." She added, "We got married around the same time and grew even closer, and when she asked me to buy a home appliance worth about 200,000 won, I bought it for her."
She continued, "I didn’t expect anything in return for what I gave, but I had thought about a gift worth around 70,000 won in case she wanted to give me a wedding gift. However, she gave me a gift worth only 38,000 won without even asking me."
She added, "I gave 300,000 won as a wedding congratulatory gift, but she and her husband came together and gave 200,000 won. Usually, when weddings happen around the same time, people return the amount they received. This friend has always taken it for granted that she couldn’t return what I gave her, and now she’s doing the same even at my wedding."
Most netizens sympathized with A, leaving comments such as, "Even if you understand everything else, the wedding gift and congratulatory money should be the same amount," and "It seems like the favors you did before have accumulated."
Another netizen added, "If someone is really struggling financially, they usually apologize and explain their situation, but that friend just saw you as someone to give to."
