Choi Seon-guk, a member of the Jeonnam Provincial Assembly (Democratic Party of Korea·Mokpo 1), strongly criticized Governor Kim Young-rok of Jeonnam for his decision to establish a single medical school in Jeonnam on the 4th.
On March 18, Choi expressed regret over Governor Kim's sudden policy shift from integrating the establishment of a national medical school to a single medical school recruitment, saying, "The long-cherished project of attracting a medical school for the residents was overturned as easily as flipping a hand by the governor's single word."
He continued, "I cannot shake off doubts about whether it is possible to establish a new medical school through a fair single medical school recruitment process," and criticized, "I cannot trust the administration that started off with arbitrariness and secrecy from the very first step."
In particular, he pointed out Governor Kim's actions that ignored cooperation with the assembly, such as excluding the assembly's participation in the 'Jeonnam National Medical School Attraction Pan-Provincial Promotion Committee' launched last November, and recently transferring the Medical School Attraction Promotion Team under the Health and Welfare Bureau to the Autonomous Administration Bureau.
Choi, who serves as the Chair of the Health, Welfare and Environment Committee of the Jeonnam Provincial Assembly, stated, "If this situation is not corrected, I will resign from the chairmanship of the Health, Welfare and Environment Committee," and urged, "Governor Kim should come back to the stage of cooperation with the residents and the assembly, the representative body of the residents, instead of unilateral provincial administration."
