Candidates running in the 22nd National Assembly general election and the Miryang by-election signed the pledge, promising to conduct a clean and honest election, fulfill their campaign promises, and not to resign prematurely after being elected.

Following this, they took a group photo and reaffirmed their commitment to establishing an election culture free from slander against opponents.

Meanwhile, a representative of the Miryang civic group for establishing a responsible election culture stated, “This pledge declaration ceremony was held to foster a culture where each candidate prioritizes keeping promises made to citizens and to renew the atmosphere of a clean and honest local political scene.”

The civic group is composed of the Miryang Newspaper, the Yeongnam-daero Restoration Pan-Citizen Promotion Committee, the Eungcheon Forum, and the Miryang Local History Research Association.

Han Tae-in, representative of the Yeongnam-daero Restoration Pan-Citizen Promotion Committee, said, “In Miryang, the chain of by-elections for mayor, provincial councilors, and city councilors, along with candidate reversals during the nomination process of major parties, has greatly unsettled the local political scene. The election culture, which should be a local festival, has faded, and public sentiment has become turbulent.” He added, “This event was held to restore the pride of Miryang citizens wounded by the mayor’s premature resignation.”

The civic group stated, “Miryang is a region with a proud history of steadfastly standing against injustice, home to figures such as Jeom Pil-jae with his spirit of wisdom and virtue, Saimdang’s spirit of dedication, and notable personalities like Yak-san Kim Won-bong and Seok-jeong Yoon Se-ju. However, due to the irresponsible behavior of some politicians, the Miryang spirit has been diminished and distorted, damaging the pride of Miryang people.” They continued, “There was a consensus that the current local situation cannot be overlooked, leading to the initiation of a series of activities to awaken the Miryang spirit.”

The candidates who attended the declaration ceremony (2 National Assembly candidates, 2 mayoral candidates, 2 provincial council candidates) said, “This was a valuable opportunity to foster a culture that prioritizes keeping promises made to citizens, renew the atmosphere of a clean and honest local political scene, and pledge a new start for a clean and dignified construction of Miryang.”
