Lee Jae-myung: "After the general election, we will form a special committee to publicize medical reform... We will end medical confusion"

Proposal to Form a Parliamentary Special Committee in Consultation with the Ruling Party
"Can No Longer Be Neglected"
"Government Must Abandon Obsession with 2,000 People... Medical Community Must Return Immediately"

Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated on the 4th regarding the issue of increasing medical school quotas, "As soon as the general election is over, we will consult with the ruling party to form a '(tentative name) Special Committee for Public Deliberation on Health and Medical Reform' in the National Assembly to end the medical service gaps and confusion."

On the same day, through social media (SNS), Lee addressed the controversy surrounding the increase in medical school quotas and the resulting medical service gaps caused by the collective resignation of residents and others, saying, "We can no longer neglect this. The Democratic Party will take the lead."

He diagnosed the situation by saying, "As the medical crisis prolongs, the damage to the public and the suffering of patients are increasing day by day," and added, "The serious problem is that the government, which should protect the safety of the people, is neglecting the medical service gaps in fact by shirking its responsibility." Lee also evaluated President Yoon Seok-yeol’s recent public address on medical school quotas by saying, "It was another confirmation that the Yoon Seok-yeol administration has neither the will nor the ability to resolve the situation."

Regarding the operation of the public deliberation special committee, he said, "We will lead social consensus through a special committee involving not only the government and the medical community but also ruling and opposition parties, citizens, and patients," and added, "We will discuss reform agendas in the health and medical sector together to ensure that the expansion of medical school quotas results in the enhancement of public, essential, and regional medical services."

Addressing the government, Lee said, "Before forming the special committee after the general election, the government must take the lead in managing the medical crisis," and added, "They must abandon the obsession with the number 2,000 and present a reasonable plan to expand medical school quotas." To the medical community, he said, "Collective actions that hold patients' lives hostage only lead to harsh public rejection," and urged, "They must immediately return to the field."
