TSMC Temporarily Halts Production of Some Semiconductors
Foxconn Also Stops Operation on Some Production Lines
The death toll from the earthquake with a magnitude of 7 or higher that occurred near Hualien in eastern Taiwan on the 3rd has risen to 9. Rescue operations are ongoing, focusing on collapsed buildings, and the number of casualties continues to increase.
According to the Taiwan Central Disaster Response Center, as of 7 p.m. on the day, the death toll from the earthquake was counted at 9. There were 946 injured, and 137 people were confirmed to be trapped due to the earthquake.
As the strong earthquake struck Taiwan, employees on the production lines of Taiwan's TSMC, the world's largest foundry (semiconductor contract manufacturer), temporarily evacuated, causing some semiconductor production to halt for a while. TSMC also suspended new construction work on that day.
In this regard, the Hsinchu Science Park Administration explained that TSMC's safety system is operating normally and that some factories in the Jhunan area were shut down as a preventive measure.
Foxconn, an Apple partner, also suspended operations on some production lines due to the strong earthquake that hit Taiwan. On the 3rd, Foxconn stated, "After the earthquake occurred, some production lines in Taiwan were stopped and inspected," adding, "There is no damage to production equipment."
This is the first time in 25 years that an earthquake with a magnitude over 7 has occurred in Taiwan. The earthquake happened at 7:58 a.m. on the 3rd in Hualien, a city in eastern Taiwan. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported the earthquake magnitude as 7.4, while Taiwanese authorities announced it as 7.2.
