Busan Gijang-gun recently focused administrative efforts on improving the traffic environment to prevent accidents involving pedestrians, following the occurrence of traffic accidents at intersections within the district.
Jeong Jong-bok, the head of Gijang County, inspecting the area where a fatal accident occurred at the intersection.
On the 2nd, the county held a countermeasure meeting with related organizations to prevent traffic accidents in areas where fatal accidents occurred. Attendees included representatives from Gijang-gun, Busan Metropolitan Police Agency, Gijang Police Station, and residents of Jeonggwan-eup, who engaged in focused discussions on the installation of diagonal crosswalks and simultaneous pedestrian signals.
In particular, the county decided to submit an emergency supplementary budget proposal of 150 million KRW to enable immediate response upon the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency's decision regarding simultaneous pedestrian signals.
County Governor Jeong Jong-bok, while inspecting the accident site, emphasized, "Nothing is more important than the safety of our residents," and stated, "We will continue to promote improvements in the traffic environment to create a city where both pedestrians and drivers are safe."
Gijang-gun has been implementing various traffic environment improvement projects to prevent pedestrian accidents, such as operating simultaneous pedestrian signals and installing ground-type pedestrian traffic lights (LED) at elementary schools, child protection zones, and intersections with many pedestrians.
Over the past five years, traffic safety facilities have been installed to prevent traffic accidents, including 24 unmanned traffic enforcement cameras, 8 ground-type pedestrian traffic lights, 28 runway-type crosswalks, and 58 crosswalk lighting fixtures.
Recently, to improve the school zone environment, the county completed the installation of diagonal crosswalks and ground-type pedestrian traffic lights (LED) in the child protection zone around Mojeon Elementary School in Jeonggwan New Town in March, and is currently investing over 1.2 billion KRW to install protective fences at three elementary schools.
