Gangdong-gu Elementary Students Get Meals and Study Support... Meal Price Increased from 7,000 to 8,000 Won

Gangdong-gu takes care of elementary school students' meals and helps them with their studies.

Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Soo-hee) announced plans to expand meal support and deploy 'Our Neighborhood Homework Helpers' to provide higher quality child welfare services to children using the 'Our Neighborhood Care Center.'

'Our Neighborhood Care Center' is a care space established for elementary school students in the area to spend their time safely and enjoyably during after-school hours or while commuting to and from academies. It offers various programs such as music, art, and physical education, and provides free meals. The free meal service includes a general type offering one meal during vacations and a hybrid type offering one meal during the semester and two meals during vacations.

This year, with Seoul City's reduction of the meal unit price for 'Our Neighborhood Care Center' to 7,000 won, concerns have been raised that it may become difficult to provide children with sufficient nutrients and that the quality of meals might decline due to the use of cheaper ingredients.

In response, Gangdong-gu plans to add 1,000 won to adjust the meal unit price to 8,000 won. Through this realistic support for meal expenses, the district aims to prevent the decline in meal quality and secure and provide essential nutrients for children's growth and development.

Additionally, the district will hire education professionals within the local community as 'Our Neighborhood Homework Helpers' and deploy them to three 'Our Neighborhood Care Centers' from April to December.

'Our Neighborhood Homework Helpers' are expected to contribute to improving children's academic achievement and filling the after-school care gap by supporting after-school learning or providing play opportunities.

Lee Soo-hee, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, “Gangdong-gu is a city certified as a child-friendly city by UNICEF, and we will strive harder to provide high-quality child welfare services and create an environment where children are happy.”
