Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Selects Key Items for 2024 Agricultural and Livestock Export Quarantine Negotiations
The government has decided to prioritize export quarantine negotiations for peaches, grapes, and Korean melons, which have superior quality overseas.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced on the 3rd that it held the 'Committee for Selecting Priority Export Quarantine Negotiation Items for Agricultural and Livestock Products' on the 29th of last month and selected the priority items for export quarantine negotiations in 2024.
Since the end of last year, the Ministry has surveyed exporters and producer organizations about the demand for desired export items. Subsequently, through the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT), it analyzed the overseas market potential of these items and reviewed domestic production and quarantine conditions to prepare a proposal for priority items. The committee then deliberated on the proposal through a three-step process and finalized 9 agricultural products (6 countries) and 7 livestock products (8 countries) as priority items.
Among agricultural products, peaches (China), grapes (Philippines), Korean melons (Vietnam), and Onju mandarins (Vietnam), which have superior quality overseas, were selected to pioneer premium markets in the future. Sweet potatoes (United States) were selected considering their high demand as various ingredients locally and the excellent quality of Korean products. Although exports are already possible, negotiations to ease quarantine requirements will be actively pursued to expand export volumes of apples and pears (Taiwan) and Shine Muscat grapes (Australia).
For livestock products, plans are in place to expand the export market for Korean beef to Singapore, the European Union (EU), and Indonesia. Heat-treated pork and dairy products, which have high overseas demand and are less affected by export suspensions even if livestock diseases occur, will be actively developed in Singapore, the United States, and Indonesia, respectively. Additionally, efforts will focus on quarantine negotiations with China for pet food, a market that is steadily growing both domestically and internationally.
Fresh poultry meat, which has a very high export dependence on specific countries and requires stable market channels, will be actively developed in new markets such as Indonesia and Malaysia.
Jung Hye-ryun, Director of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, stated, "We will continuously discover promising items in existing export markets such as China, the EU, the United States, and Singapore to expand exports, and strategically conduct export quarantine negotiations to actively develop new export markets."
