Cheonan City Challenges Designation as Autonomous Driving Pilot Zone... Service Project Launched

Cheonan City in Chungnam Province is challenging itself to be designated as an autonomous vehicle pilot operation zone.

On the 2nd, the city launched the "Cheonan City Autonomous Driving Pilot Operation Zone Designation Research Project" to discover specialized services reflecting local characteristics such as transportation, culture, and environment, and to create the optimal pilot zone environment.

The autonomous driving pilot operation zone is an area where, according to the "Act on the Promotion and Support of Commercialization of Autonomous Vehicles," various legal regulations are exempted to allow research and demonstration of diverse services for autonomous vehicle operation.

Through this six-month project, the city plans to discover specialized services, review the preliminary feasibility of designating the autonomous driving pilot zone, related infrastructure development, and basic plans for future development.

Additionally, the city will assess the competitiveness of the autonomous driving pilot operation zone and develop operational plans to apply for designation of the pilot operation zone to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Mayor Park Sang-don stated, "As the transportation sector is rapidly growing beyond time, we will continuously promote autonomous driving living labs and demonstration projects to maximize the synergy of the pilot operation zone."
