▲Yellow Protective Fence ▲Yellow Crosswalk ▲Runway-Style Crosswalk and Other Visibility Enhancements
Dongjak-gu (Mayor Park Il-ha) is strengthening child traffic safety by installing a set of three ‘Visibility-Enhanced Traffic Safety Facilities’ in school zones.
The ‘Visibility-Enhanced Traffic Safety Facilities’ are installed in a noticeable yellow color to easily recognize the areas protecting vulnerable road users, including ▲yellow protective fences ▲yellow crosswalks ▲runway-style crosswalks, to create safe school routes.
The district installed the set of three visibility-enhanced traffic safety facilities last month in two school zones: in front of Gangnam Elementary School and Yedam Daycare Center, so that drivers in the area can clearly identify the school zone sections.
First, following the amendment of the Road Traffic Act in July this year, which mandates the installation of protective fences in school zones, the district not only newly installed fences but also marked them in yellow.
The yellow protective fences help protect pedestrians by preventing jaywalking and stopping vehicles from invading sidewalks due to speeding or carelessness.
The fence design uses characters that children like to add friendliness, and through design review, it was manufactured with safety-focused features such as spacing and thickness of the posts, ensuring both visibility and safety.
Additionally, the crosswalks were changed from white to yellow to help drivers easily recognize the protected area and prevent traffic accidents in advance.
To secure drivers’ visibility during nighttime or rainy weather, runway-style crosswalks were additionally installed to create a safe walking environment.
The runway-style crosswalks are eco-friendly light emitters that line both sides of the crosswalk at regular intervals like an airplane runway, charging with solar energy during the day and automatically lighting up at night.
By the first half of this year, the district plans to additionally install the ‘Visibility-Enhanced Traffic Safety Facilities’ at eight school zones including Bondong Elementary School, Sinsangdo Elementary School, Dongjak Elementary School, Haengnim Elementary School, and Boramae Elementary School.
Furthermore, to help drivers’ visibility and induce vehicle deceleration, the district will expand necessary facilities such as voice guidance devices or start/end point markers in a total of 72 protection zones for children, elderly, and disabled people.
By June, unmanned traffic enforcement equipment (speed cameras) will also be installed in three local school zones: Sinsangdo Elementary School, Myeongsu Kindergarten, and Nuri Daycare Center.
Park Il-ha, Mayor of Dongjak-gu, emphasized, “We have strengthened traffic safety facilities in school zones to create school routes where parents and children can feel safe. We will continue to do our best to create a safe walking environment for all residents, including vulnerable road users.”
