The Susaek Underpass in Mapo-gu (1053 Sangam-dong) was completed in 1936 and marks its 88th year this year. With a total length of 188 meters, it is currently the only pedestrian path connecting Susaek Station to Sangam-dong DMC (Digital Media City).

Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) announced that in March, they installed security CCTV cameras and emergency safety bells inside the aging Susaek Underpass.

The district explained that this installation was due to the usual congestion during commuting hours where pedestrians, bicycles, and motorcycles mix, posing safety risks, and because the underground nature of the space raises concerns about various incidents occurring during times with few people present.

The CCTV cameras and emergency safety bells were each installed at the underpass entrance, center, and exit. The CCTV footage is displayed in real-time at the Mapo-gu Integrated Control Center and the Mapo-gu Disaster and Safety Situation Room, allowing immediate verification of on-site conditions when danger arises.

Additionally, in case of an emergency, pressing the emergency safety bell connects directly to a police officer stationed at the Mapo-gu Integrated Control Center, and the on-site footage along with the reporting location is displayed at the control center, enabling prompt response.

Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “We hope that citizens using the Susaek Underpass can enjoy a safer daily life with the security CCTV and emergency safety bells that allow real-time response. As the Sangam-dong area is expected to undergo significant development including Lotte Mall, we will do our best to prepare measures so that pedestrians traveling between Sangam and Susaek Station can use the area more conveniently and safely.”

On March 20, Mapo-gu held a meeting with Seoul city departments and the Korea Railroad Corporation’s Smart Station Area Project Team to discuss the installation of an aboveground pedestrian connection around Susaek Station.

The district stated that since the Susaek Underpass is aging and poses risks of pedestrian accidents, and especially due to concerns about flooding during heavy summer rains, a safe aboveground pedestrian path is essential. They plan to continue discussions with related agencies to promote the installation of an aboveground pedestrian connection at Susaek Station.
