Seongbuk-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) has begun preparatory work to develop the Imun (Seokgwan) Vehicle Depot, located in Seokgwan-dong and Imun-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, into the central hub of the northeastern living area.
Since the enactment of the 'Railroad Underground Integrated Development Act' last January, the complex development of the Imun (Seokgwan) Vehicle Depot, which had been promoted as part of Seoul City's '2040 Seoul Urban Master Plan,' has gained momentum. This is due to the urgent need for measures related to the vehicle depot in connection with the undergrounding of the Gyeongwon Line.
Once the basic survey for the 'Feasibility Study and Development Plan Concept for the Imun Vehicle Depot Complex Development,' conducted by Seoul City, is completed this month, the development types and commercialization strategies are expected to become more concrete.
The Imun (Seokgwan) Vehicle Depot covers approximately 200,000㎡ and is a station area centered around Seokgye Station on subway lines 1 and 6, adjacent to Seongbuk-gu as well as Dongdaemun-gu, Nowon-gu, and Jungnang-gu. However, noise and dust caused by the Imun (Seokgwan) Vehicle Depot have frequently led to complaints, and it has been consistently identified as a factor hindering connectivity and development in the living area, prompting ongoing calls for redevelopment.
The district office plans to analyze local conditions, including nearby Korea University, Korea National University of Arts, Jungnangcheon Stream, elementary, middle, and high schools, Uireung, Seongbuk Cultural Heritage Center, and apartment complexes, and review various facility development plans such as a large-scale park linked to Jungnangcheon Stream as a waterfront hub, healthcare facilities like a general hospital, a municipal library that can serve as a landmark, and youth startup support facilities.
The district will actively promote the complex development of the Imun (Seokgwan) Vehicle Depot by forming consultative bodies including local residents and conducting public opinion surveys to raise awareness and gather opinions, ensuring that Seongbuk-gu’s development plans are reflected. It will also actively participate in close collaboration with neighboring Dongdaemun-gu, Nowon-gu, and Jungnang-gu to reorganize urban spaces and create a model for innovative regional development.
Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, stated, “The complex development of the Imun (Seokgwan) Vehicle Depot is a project that can transform the underdeveloped Jangwi and Seokgwan-dong into the central hub of the northeastern living area and become a driving force for regional revitalization.” He added, “We will do our utmost by maximizing the district’s administrative capabilities and available resources to improve the quality of life for local residents.”
