Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, became the subject of a police investigation after fake composite photos of him wearing a prison uniform were distributed in the heart of Seoul.
Seoul Hyehwa Police Station announced on the 1st that they are tracking the distributor on charges of illegal election campaigning under the Public Official Election Act, following a report on the 31st of last month that a photo of Lee wearing a prison uniform and sitting in a detention center was placed in the entrance of a mixed-use residential and commercial building in Sungin-dong, Jongno-gu.

According to the police, the informant was a staff member of the Democratic Party candidate Kwak Sang-eon’s office in Jongno-gu, Seoul. A citizen who found the printed material containing the fake composite photo of Lee visited the office and showed the material, prompting the report.
The police collected two copies of the printed material and secured additional witness statements during their inquiries.
Furthermore, to identify the distributor, they are analyzing CCTV footage near the mixed-use building and conducting fingerprint analysis on the printed materials.
