On the 1st, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yeol will attend the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) Foreign Ministers' Meeting Allies and Partners Session held in Brussels, Belgium on the 4th.
The meeting is expected to be attended by NATO allies as well as Indo-Pacific partner countries such as South Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and others including Ukraine and the European Union (EU).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained, "Minister Cho's participation in this meeting is expected to further strengthen the partnership with NATO, which shares universal values, and serve as an opportunity to explore responses to transnational security threats."
The meeting will mainly discuss the recent situation of the Ukraine war and military cooperation between North Korea and Russia.
Since the 2022 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, NATO has held separate meeting sessions with countries such as South Korea, Japan, New Zealand, and Australia. This is interpreted as an intention to increase engagement with Indo-Pacific countries in response to China and others. South Korea has attended for three consecutive years through this year.
Attention is focused on whether Minister Cho will meet with Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko during this meeting. The two ministers last met at the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the end of February.
