Hyundai Motor Group Chung Mong-Koo Foundation Supports 14 ASEAN Scholars for Spring Semester

The Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-Koo Foundation announced on the 1st that it held the 'Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-Koo Scholarship Certificate Award Ceremony' for ASEAN country scholarship students at the Ondream Society in Myeongdong, Seoul, on the 30th of last month.

The selected scholarship students this time are 14 students for the 2024 spring semester. Their nationalities consist of 8 from Indonesia, 2 from Malaysia, and 1 each from Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. The selected students will major in fields such as biotechnology, Korean language education, and development policy at Korea University, Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Hanyang University, KAIST, and KDI School of Public Policy and Management. They will receive tuition and study support funds until graduation and can also participate in the Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-Koo Scholarship networking program.

The 'Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-Koo Scholarship' is a flagship project of the Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-Koo Foundation that reflects the talent development philosophy of its founder, Chung Mong-Koo, Honorary Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group. After operating domestic scholarship programs since 2011, the scope was expanded to include ASEAN international students starting in 2020. ASEAN scholarship students receive academic support to pursue master's and doctoral degrees in Korea and can participate in the Chung Mong-Koo Fellowship networking program. To date, 206 ASEAN scholarship students have received scholarship benefits totaling 10.6 billion KRW, and among them, 94 students have returned to their home countries or found employment or continued their studies in Korea after graduation.

Support for scholarship students is at the highest domestic level. Selected students receive full tuition coverage until graduation, an annual study support fund of 12 million KRW, settlement support funds, and graduation encouragement money. Additionally, a scholarship of 3 million KRW is provided for publishing papers in internationally renowned academic journals, and up to 2.5 million KRW is supported for participation in international academic conferences.

Zuhdi, a scholarship student from Indonesia who will pursue a master's degree at KAIST this time, said, "I am happy to be selected as a scholarship student," and added, "Through my studies in Korea, I want to become a person who can contribute to both Indonesia and Korea."

Starting this September, the foundation will expand support for foreign scholarship students to include undergraduates. This is to actively respond to national demographic issues such as low birth rates and declining school-age populations, as well as to foster global talent from ASEAN countries. The 10 additional undergraduate scholarship students will take two semesters as visiting students at Korea University, Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and Hanyang University for one year, receiving full tuition coverage and study support funds.

A foundation official stated, "This scholarship program is expected to reflect the increasing demand for studying in Korea from ASEAN countries while also contributing to the internationalization of universities and the inflow of outstanding overseas talent into Korea."
