On the afternoon of the 29th, President Yoon Suk-yeol met with a delegation of seven U.S. Congress members, including Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who are visiting Korea, and urged the enhancement of economic cooperation between the two countries.
The presidential office stated that President Yoon met with the U.S. congressional delegation at the Yongsan Presidential Office on the same day and exchanged views on strengthening the Korea-U.S. alliance as well as promoting economic cooperation.
President Yoon said, "The Korea-U.S. alliance, a 'global comprehensive strategic alliance' based on universal values of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law, is expanding its scope day by day beyond military security to economic security, advanced technology, culture, cyber, and space."
He added, "Active investment and economic cooperation between Korea and the U.S. are bringing tangible benefits that the people of both countries can feel, such as increased trade, job creation, and expanded human exchanges," and emphasized, "Please pay attention to supporting Korean companies operating in the U.S. so that this mutually beneficial cooperation can be further expanded."
In particular, President Yoon requested special support for the passage of a professional visa quota bill to ensure smooth entry of Korean skilled workers and youth into the U.S.
The visiting delegation evaluated that "since President Yoon's state visit to the U.S. in April last year, Korea-U.S. relations have reached an all-time high," and expressed respect for "President Yoon's courage in facing political risks, recognizing changes of the era, and improving Korea-U.S.-Japan relations." They also stated, "The U.S. Congress will do its part to continuously develop the Korea-U.S. alliance and strengthen the momentum for economic cooperation between the two countries."
Furthermore, they added, "The strong Korea-U.S. alliance is maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula in the face of North Korea's threats and provocations," and "We actively support President Yoon's efforts to promote freedom and human rights for every individual in North Korea."
