"Korean Dumplings Have Different Forms from Chinese and Japanese"
US CNN broadcast named Korea's 'Kimchi Mandu' as one of the 'world's best dumpling dishes.' On the 28th, CNN highlighted unique dumpling dishes from around the world in a special travel feature article. The article featured dumpling dishes from dozens of countries, including Korea's Kimchi Mandu.
CNN described Kimchi Mandu as "more similar to Central Asia's Manti than to Chinese or Japanese dumplings." Manti is a dish developed in the Caucasus and Central Asia, consisting of thin wheat flour dough filled with meat or vegetable stuffing and steamed. The difference from Korean-style dumplings is that Manti is served with yogurt sauce.
CNN explained, "Dumplings are often folded into a round shape, which is rare in Chinese-style dumplings," adding, "especially Koreans finely chop 'kimchi' and stuff it into the dumplings." They further noted, "Kimchi is a food found everywhere in Korea," and predicted, "It was perhaps inevitable that Koreans invented Kimchi Mandu."
Meanwhile, Korean-style dumplings have recently gained attention in the US food market. In particular, CJ CheilJedang's Bibigo dumpling brand has reportedly become a popular product in large retail chains such as Costco.
In fact, Bibigo dumplings solidified their position as the market leader by surpassing a 50% market share in the dumpling market as of the third quarter of last year. This achievement came just over two years after first reaching number one with a 39% market share in 2021. To meet soaring demand, CJ CheilJedang is already producing Korean-style dumplings locally in the US. Bibigo factories located in California, New York, and New Jersey conduct dumpling research and development as well as product manufacturing.
