A prisoner who successfully escaped by climbing over the prison wall died after being hit by a hit-and-run vehicle.

On the 28th, Fox News reported that a prisoner who escaped from a Hawaii prison died after being hit by a car while fleeing from the police. Matthew O'Nellarus Junior (33), who was serving time on drug charges, escaped last Friday from the Kauai Regional Correctional Center in Hawaii. However, he was found severely injured on a road less than 100 meters from the prison wall. He was hit by a hit-and-run vehicle just minutes after escaping.

The Hawaii Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation stated that he died from severe injuries. The correctional authorities said O'Nellarus climbed over the barbed wire fence and that the guards pursued him but lost him. The guards heard the sound of a vehicle hitting something and found O'Nellarus on the highway about 100 meters from the prison. The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is investigating the circumstances of the escape and continues to search for the driver of the vehicle who fled before emergency responders arrived.
