Nam Kyung-pil, former governor of Gyeonggi Province who has transformed into a business executive, will lead the autonomous driving business, a new venture of GemVax Link.
GemVax Link announced that it has appointed former Governor Nam as its chairman.
Chairman Nam Kyung-pil served as a five-term member of the National Assembly from his early 30s to mid-50s and was the 34th governor of Gyeonggi Province. During his tenure as governor, he implemented various policies to create a safe and convenient public transportation environment. A pilot project addressing bus safety accidents caused by drowsy driving, which simultaneously tackled the chronic shortage of transportation workers and created reemployment opportunities for middle-aged workers, received favorable reviews.
After retiring from politics in 2019, he established and operated a platform business. As a startup CEO, he successfully transformed into an entrepreneur by promoting various new businesses with young entrepreneurs.
Last month, GemVax Link signed a joint venture (JV) agreement with Pony AI to establish 'Pony AI Mobility.' Along with the full-scale promotion of autonomous driving transportation businesses such as taxis, buses, and freight, they recruited Chairman Nam, who possesses insight, strategy, and networks in related fields.
Chairman Nam said, "Although the autonomous driving business is still unfamiliar in Korea, from a mid- to long-term perspective, it is a future strategic business that can be a key to solving various social problems and can become a new competitive advantage for the Republic of Korea." He added, "I will do my best to contribute to growing the autonomous driving business, which Pony AI and GemVax Link have joined forces to develop, in a direction that advances the related industrial sectors to the next level."
