'2024 Busan City Skills Competition' Held

April 1-5 Competitions Held at 8 Venues Including Busan Gigaegonggo

The Busan Skills Competition Committee (Chairman Park Hyung-jun) will hold the Busan Skills Competition from April 1 to 5 at eight venues including Busan Mechanical Technical High School.

This competition will feature events in 47 different categories across seven divisions such as machinery, metal & transportation, and electrical & electronics, including polymechanics, welding, piping, and industrial electronic devices. A total of 316 athletes will participate to showcase their skills.


Competitors range from the oldest athlete, aged 69, who has over 50 years of field experience, to students who just entered high school this year, representing a wide range of ages competing for medals. Notably, it is expected to draw attention as senior and junior athletes with over 50 years difference in the same category meet.


Awards including medals and prize money will be given to winners, and those who place will also qualify to represent the city at the 59th National Skills Competition to be held in Gyeongbuk Province starting August 24.


During the competition period, Busan Mechanical Technical High School will also host various experiential events for visitors to the venues beyond the athletes' competitions.


Traditional cultural experiences organized by skilled organizations such as the Korea Masters Association Busan Branch will be held, including ironwork, haircuts, nail art, cupping therapy, strawberry fresh cream cake, and jajangmyeon demonstrations.

The opening ceremony of this competition will be held on April 1 at 10 a.m. in the City Hall International Conference Hall. About 300 people including Mayor Park Hyung-jun, Superintendent of Education Ha Yun-su, Director of Busan Regional Employment and Labor Office Kim Jun-hwi, key figures from the Busan area, participating athletes, and technical committee members are expected to attend.


Shin Seung-sik, Chairman of the Busan Skills Competition Committee Operations (Director of Korea Industrial Human Resources Corporation Busan Regional Headquarters), stated, “The Skills Competition is a platform for nurturing skilled talents who will lead the future of Korea. As it is a competition to select local talents who will expand globally, we will do our best to hold a fair and transparent event.”


Mayor Park Hyung-jun said, “Skilled technicians are the main drivers of Busan’s economic and industrial development,” adding, “Our city will spare no support to help them take a step further in their respective fields and grow into outstanding technicians.”
