To resolve the inconvenience caused to residents by odors generated in the Pohang Steel Industrial Complex, the public and private sectors are joining hands to actively improve air quality.
On the 28th, a voluntary odor improvement agreement ceremony for steel complex workplaces was held in the conference room of Pohang Steel Management Corporation, followed by a commemorative photo session.
On the 28th, Pohang City held a ‘Voluntary Odor Improvement Agreement Ceremony for Steel Complex Workplaces’ at the Pohang Steel Management Corporation conference room, where both public and private sectors agreed to unite their efforts for voluntary odor improvement.
At the ceremony, Mayor Lee Kang-deok, along with related organizations and companies including Pohang Steel Management Corporation, POSCO, Hyundai Steel, Dongkuk Steel, the Gyeongbuk Eastern Environmental Technology Association, and the Pohang Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (RIST), participated to specifically discuss the odor improvement measures each entity is individually pursuing and to deliberate on ways to eradicate odors.
Through this agreement, the city will provide financial support and administrative assistance such as permits to companies that strive to reduce odors, while POSCO and the Pohang Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (RIST) will be responsible for technical support including odor diagnosis and deriving improvement plans to reduce odor substances.
Additionally, workplaces will voluntarily establish odor improvement plans and undertake facility upgrades, dedicating full efforts to odor reduction.
Pohang City is promoting customized eco-friendly consulting support for odor-emitting businesses in collaboration with POSCO and the Pohang Institute of Industrial Science and Technology to improve odors in the steel complex, and is working to manage odor emission sources by investigating the odor status of the steel complex through the Korea Environment Corporation and supporting odor reduction technologies.
The city has also strengthened patrol activities in the complex area by operating an environmental complaint situation room and a private environmental monitoring group to address odor issues in the steel complex, and has established a continuous monitoring system through an odor monitoring system and regular odor sampling and analysis.
Furthermore, the city is encouraging continuous facility improvements by supporting installation costs for air pollution prevention facilities for small and medium-sized enterprises wishing to upgrade their pollution control equipment.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, “We ask for the active participation and interest of workplaces to fundamentally resolve the chronic odor problems within the steel complex,” and added, “We will take the lead in ensuring citizens’ right to live in a healthy and pleasant environment by continuously working together in the public and private sectors to improve odors and air quality.”
