Signature Campaign for the Promotion of Jeokinseonsa Pagoda to National Treasure Status
Early April On-site Inspection by Cultural Heritage Administration, Review by Cultural Heritage Committee, etc.
Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 28th that it will carry out a one-month county-wide signature campaign expressing the hope for the elevation of Treasure No. 273, ‘Gokseong Taeansa Jeoginseonsa Pagoda,’ to National Treasure status.
The county plans to focus on raising awareness of the necessity and validity of the Jeoginseonsa Pagoda’s elevation to National Treasure at various locations such as Taeansa Temple, Gokseong-eup traditional market, and eup/myeon offices.
The ‘Gokseong Taeansa Jeoginseonsa Pagoda’ was built immediately after the passing of Jeoginseonsa Hyecheol, the founder of the Dongri school, along with a pagoda stele, allowing detailed knowledge of the main figure’s achievements. The construction period is clear, and it is the only example among Unified Silla Buddhist pagodas in Korea where all components from the pedestal to the finial remain undamaged, continuously supporting the case for its elevation to National Treasure.
Accordingly, since 2021, Gokseong-gun has conducted research projects, precise excavation surveys, and academic conferences to confirm the historical, academic, and artistic values of the Jeoginseonsa Pagoda as conditions for National Treasure status, and submitted an application for National Treasure designation to the Cultural Heritage Administration.
In April, related procedures such as on-site inspections by the Cultural Heritage Administration and review by the Cultural Heritage Committee are scheduled to take place.
A county official stated, “We earnestly hope to spread a county-wide atmosphere to achieve the elevation to National Treasure, and we expect many residents to show interest and participate in this signature campaign.”
