The Jeonnam Regional Headquarters of the Korea Rural Community Corporation recently announced on the 28th that it will invest 20.2 billion KRW to dredge 37 reservoirs in the Jeonnam region to enhance flood response and water management capabilities in response to the increasing intensity of localized heavy rains.
This is the largest number of sites nationwide among the 60 dredging target areas selected by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs this year, due to the heightened need for securing surplus water during last year's severe drought and flood season.
The reservoir dredging project involves excavating sediment deposited on the reservoir bottom and expanding the water storage capacity to secure sufficient water volume, thereby preparing for droughts and enhancing flood response capabilities through water retention during flood seasons.
The selected dredging sites in our region are reservoirs with low water storage rates, high sedimentation ratios, and large beneficiary areas. By region, there are 10 sites in Haenam, 6 in Jangseong, 4 in Gokseong, 4 in Gurye, 3 in Jindo, 2 each in Goheung, Yeongam, and Hampyeong, and one site each in Wando, Naju, Suncheon, and Hwasun.
Director Cho Young-ho said, "Once dredging is completed, it will have the effect of creating 12 new reservoirs with a capacity of 100,000 tons each." He added, "Along with these short-term measures, we will develop permanent solutions such as flood control capacity enhancement projects and rural water development projects to ensure stable water resource securing and management through broad and proactive responses."
