Busan Office of Education Enhances Korean Language Skills for Multicultural and North Korean Defector Students

Expansion of Customized Education for Multicultural and North Korean Defector Students

New Advanced TOPIK Class Established to Support College Admission and Employment

The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education is stepping up support for multicultural and North Korean defector students who face difficulties in daily and school life due to insufficient Korean language proficiency.

On the 28th, the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Ha Yun-su) announced that starting next month, it will operate the ‘Visiting Korean Language Classroom’ and the ‘Dodam Dodam Korean Language Classroom’ to enhance the Korean language skills of multicultural and North Korean defector students.

These classrooms are customized educational policies for multicultural and North Korean defector students, aimed at improving their Korean language abilities so they can develop their individual talents and aptitudes.

In response to the continuous increase in multicultural students, the Busan Office of Education has increased the pool of Korean language teachers from 45 to 62 earlier this month, anticipating a rise in demand for Korean language education.

Based on this, starting from the 1st of next month, the ‘Visiting Korean Language Classroom’ and the ‘Dodam Dodam Korean Language Classroom’ will be expanded.

The ‘Visiting Korean Language Classroom (visiting type)’ matches multicultural students with Korean language instructors and provides up to 10 hours of Korean language education per week until the end of the year. It will support 583 hours, a 14% increase compared to 513 hours last year, targeting multicultural students with significantly low Korean proficiency.

The ‘Dodam Dodam Korean Language Classroom’ will operate until February next year for multicultural students who entered Korea mid-term and find it difficult to enroll in Korean language classes. It provides support with up to 10 hours per week per student, combining online classes.

This year, an advanced class preparing for the ‘Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK)’ will be newly established to provide practical help to students preparing for further education and employment.

Ha Yun-su, Superintendent of the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education, said, “The city education office is making multifaceted efforts to improve the Korean language proficiency of multicultural and North Korean defector students. We will operate substantial and systematic Korean language education to support their growth as members of our society without hesitation.”
