The Land of Samba, a Paradise for Sexual Minorities: 10,000 Same-Sex Marriages Annually... Heterosexual Marriage Growth Rate 5 Times Higher

Number of Same-Sex Marriages Exceeds 10,000 in 2022
Shows 20% Increase Compared to Previous Year

Since Brazil legalized same-sex marriage in 2013, the number of same-sex marriages has surged in recent years.

According to data released on the 27th (local time) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the number of same-sex marriage registrations in 2022 reached 11,000, showing a 20% increase compared to the previous year. This is five times the 4% increase rate of opposite-sex marriages during the same period. Among same-sex marriages, female couples account for about 60%.

This statistical survey excluded 'common-law relationships' and only considered civil marriages registered at registry offices. The number of same-sex marriages announced this time is the highest since Brazil legalized same-sex marriage in 2013. Although same-sex marriages account for only 1.1% of all marriages, they have been steadily increasing, especially in the northern, southeastern, and southern regions of Brazil.

Additionally, the total number of marriages in Brazil increased by 4% in 2022 compared to the previous year. However, this figure is still lower than the annual average before the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, revealing a gradual decline in overall marriage numbers.

The IBGE's statistical survey was based on the number of formal marriage registrations among the population aged 16 and older, the legal marriageable age, showing that 5.9 people per 1,000 of marriageable age got married. The number of divorces in 2022 increased by 8.6% compared to the previous year. The average divorce age was 44 for men and 41 for women.

Meanwhile, some countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and South Africa currently allow same-sex marriage. In South America, Argentina legalized same-sex marriage in 2010, Uruguay in 2013, and Colombia in 2016.
