Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, is expanding the user base of his artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot 'Grok.'
On the 27th (local time), Musk announced on the social networking service (SNS) X (formerly Twitter) that "all premium subscribers on X will be able to use Grok later this week."
The generative AI Grok was developed based on the large language model (LLM) Grok-1 by xAI, an AI startup founded by Musk in July last year. It was created to compete with OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Initially, after its official release in December last year, Grok was only available to 'Premium Plus' subscribers paying $16 per month among X account users in the United States. Now, after about four months, it is being expanded to all premium subscribers. According to research firm Statista, as of April last year, when there was only one paid subscription tier, the number of premium subscribers reached approximately 640,000.
As Grok broadens its reach, intense competition among generative AIs is expected. Besides ChatGPT, similar types of generative AI services are offered mainly by big tech companies such as Gemini (Google) and Meta AI (Meta Platforms).
There is also interest in whether the launch of Grok can help X generate revenue. Since Musk's acquisition, X has seen a significant decline in advertising revenue, making diversification of its revenue structure urgent. In particular, Musk faced controversy last November after posting a message on his X account that appeared to endorse anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. Major companies such as IBM, Apple, Disney, and Walmart have since stopped advertising on X.
X announced that as of this year, its daily average active users reach about 250 million, and its monthly users total 550 million.
