Exploring Strategies to Boost Agricultural and Food Exports

Gyeongnam Nonghyup held the 2024 Steering Committee meeting on the 27th, attended by 15 executive union heads of the Gyeongnam Export Nonghyup Council.

At the Steering Committee meeting, they analyzed the previous year's export performance and results, shared information on major export agricultural products such as paprika, strawberries, sweet persimmons, flowers, chestnuts, and processed goods, and explored ways to revitalize exports.

As of the end of February 2024, Gyeongnam Nonghyup's export performance reached 25 million dollars, an increase of 5.5% (1.3 million dollars) compared to the same period last year. Strawberry exports, a major export item of Gyeongnam, increased by 14.5% (164 tons) due to the popularity of the Geumsil variety and strengthened overseas marketing, while paprika exports decreased by 14.7% (171 tons) due to poor crop conditions caused by abnormal weather, crop switching, and the weak yen.

Kang Bok-won, chairman of the council, stated, “We will expand exports through diversifying export markets based on overseas market research, minimizing claims through experience in export distribution channels, supporting members' export promotion activities, and discovering support projects through meetings with related organizations, export companies, and integrated export organizations.”

Jo Geun-su, head of the headquarters, said, “We will strengthen on-site support for production area Nonghyups and establish a support system through cooperation with export-related organizations, while doing our best to secure export competitiveness by fostering specialized export organizations and expanding overseas market promotions.”

Meanwhile, the Gyeongnam Export Nonghyup Council is an organization where Nonghyups in Gyeongnam that are exporting or wish to export become members to share information and know-how.

Formed in April 1999, as of 2024, a total of 65 Nonghyups in Gyeongnam participate as members, carrying out various efforts to revitalize exports.
