Publication of 'Mulbitppuri,' a Story of Youth Rooted in Yeongdeok
Gyeongbuk Yeongdeok Culture and Tourism Foundation (Chairman Kim Kwang-yeol, County Governor) published a book on the 22nd as part of the 2023 Cultural Specialization Regional Development Project, recording the stories of young migrants to Yeongdeok.
Entitled Mulbitppuri with the subtitle "Stories of 17 Young People Rooted in Yeongdeok," the title symbolizes how diverse personalities live rooted in Yeongdeok’s sea, just as the color of the sea’s water changes depending on the viewer.
Mulbitppuri is organized into four themes: ▲ Dreaming of Yeongdeok as a City of Youth ▲ At the Crossroads of Achieving Dreams ▲ Yeongdeok as a New Base for Artists ▲ People Waiting for the Moment.
The book records the unique histories of 17 young individuals with various occupations and backgrounds?including cultural planners, designers, farmers, self-employed workers, aspiring entrepreneurs, and bandmasters?detailing their lives before coming to Yeongdeok, reasons for choosing Yeongdeok, a city facing population decline, the frustrations and overcoming processes during settlement, and their aspirations for the future.
Notably, the book includes stories not only of young people who have settled in Yeongdeok but also of those currently considering migration or planning to move there.
It explores the concerns of prospective young migrants, the lives they dream of in Yeongdeok, and whether they will firmly take root and open a new chapter in their lives in Yeongdeok.
Another point of interest is that the young people themselves completed the entire process?from selecting the title, conducting photography and interviews, organizing and editing, to book design and production. The vivid voices of the youth, edited with background music from Yeongdeok youth band ‘7beon Gukdo,’ are separately included in an interview sketch video available on the foundation’s YouTube channel.
The foundation official in charge of planning this publication stated, “Yeongdeok has long been associated with nicknames like a super-aged society and a city facing population extinction, but since the launch of the Yeongdeok Culture and Tourism Foundation and the implementation of cultural projects, we have collaborated with many young migrants to Yeongdeok. Working directly and indirectly with them, I wanted to widely share the fact that there are many brave young people in Yeongdeok who are moving beyond being part of the relational population to settling down in the nest called Yeongdeok, expanding their families, and realizing new lives and dreams.”
He added, “The process of creating the book allowed us to deeply understand the different colors and inner stories of each young person, making it a meaningful project. I hope that through this book, more young people will have hope in Yeongdeok and sow the seeds of their dreams.”
Mulbitppuri: Stories of 17 Young People Rooted in Yeongdeok is not for sale. Those interested can call the Tourism Marketing Team of the Yeongdeok Culture and Tourism Foundation, and anyone can download it from the foundation’s website in the publication resources section.
