First Seoul District to Propose Pledges to Local National Assembly Candidates
Identified 22 Projects in 5 Essential Local Sectors
Requested Administrative, Financial, and Institutional Cooperation from the National Assembly and Government
Ahead of the 22nd National Assembly election on April 10, Jung-gu, Seoul (Mayor Kim Gil-seong) selected 22 essential projects across five key sectors for the region and proposed them as pledges to candidates on the 22nd.
Jung-gu compiled a list of 22 projects requiring national-level cooperation in five major areas: urban development (6 projects), education and culture (4 projects), welfare and health (4 projects), tourism and economy (4 projects), and resident convenience (4 projects).
An official from the district stated, “Jung-gu maintains close communication with residents 24/7, so we have a thorough understanding of the local issues and what the residents want.”
Furthermore, the official explained the background of this proposal: “By clearly identifying the projects needed in Jung-gu to the National Assembly candidates, we aim to establish a foundation for Jung-gu to work synergistically with the National Assembly and government, all ‘toward the residents’ in the same direction.”
In the urban development sector, which faces significant challenges, the projects include ▲construction of the new National Medical Center ▲establishment of a K-pop complex cultural facility in Hunryeonwon Park ▲creation of a green ecological downtown Seun district ▲public housing complex projects in low-rise residential areas of Yaksu and Dasan-dong ▲and development of an urban ecology in Ojang-dong and Chungmuro areas where work (職), residence (住), and leisure (樂) coexist. These projects aim to improve the residential environment, enhance the city’s appeal, prevent depopulation, and restore urban functions.
Proposals to dramatically improve the insufficient educational infrastructure and meaningfully connect Jung-gu’s rich historical, cultural, and artistic resources to drive regional development were also included. These include ▲construction of the second education support center in the Jungnim area ▲customized academic improvement and career education programs for middle and high school students ▲priority allocation improvements for local residents in high schools within the district ▲and establishment of the Chungmuro arts and culture belt.
Seventy percent of foreign tourists visiting Seoul come to Jung-gu, including Myeongdong, Namsan, and Namdaemun Market. It is urgent to create ‘killer content’ to encourage tourists to stay longer.
Jung-gu proposed to local National Assembly candidates ▲development of world-class tourist-oriented traditional markets such as Shin Jungang Market ▲architectural innovation projects for Namdaemun Market ▲and institutional support for Myeongdong, designated as a free outdoor advertising zone, to be reborn as a second Times Square.
Additionally, the district included projects such as ▲support for infertile couples ▲sports facilities for residents ▲and expansion of CCTV installations in the proposal. The district also carefully requested pledges for long-standing resident needs such as ▲public complex office buildings ▲public parking lots ▲and construction of welfare centers for the disabled.
Kim Gil-seong, Mayor of Jung-gu, said, “Since the winner of the 22nd National Assembly election will enter the National Assembly as a representative of the region, Jung-gu will actively assist to ensure that the representative fully understands the residents’ wishes and expectations based on a deep understanding of Jung-gu.” He added, “I hope that the projects essential to Jung-gu will be reflected in the pledges, enriching the lives of Jung-gu residents.” He also stated, “We will continue to do our best to ensure that Jung-gu’s major projects proceed smoothly in alignment with the National Assembly and government.”
